The Challenge
Biddeford Savings Bank needed to do a major network overhaul. It was the summer of 2004 and all the servers were going on five years old. The senior IT Officer, brought in the year before to revamp the growing bank's IT infrastructure, recommended replacing the aging equipment and moving into an active directory system. In addition, the multi-branch community bank sought a local vendor replacement to assist them in 24/7 monitoring of their security posture. The bank wanted to explore intra-branch communications and IP telephony options as well. Last but not least, the financial institution needed to ensure strict compliance with federal regulations such as the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (GLBA) and examine at the possibility of meeting future PCI requirements.
The Solution
Biddeford Savings Bank determined that Systems Engineering was the best fit to help them accomplish their IT goals. The bank was moved from NT4 to the Windows 2003 server. Soon afterwards, 14 HP Proliant servers and a new version of Exchange were installed, routers were upgraded, a CS MARS Cisco Security Event Manager implemented, and the bank switched to a new frame relay service provider. Sharepoint implementation provided "an exceptional framework for our internal communications" between branches and the 65 users on the bank's network. Biddeford Savings Bank opted for Managed Services Critical Care to monitor and maintain the servers.
Results
Systems Engineering now monitors the bank's firewall and intrusion prevention system 24/7. Downtime has been virtually eliminated, and operations for both users and customers are smooth and continuous every day, all year long. Systems Engineering has also installed Cisco IP phones in the bank's five branches, including their newest branch in Kennebunk. Now, labor intensive patching and systems backups are automated leaving more time for network planning and design. The icing on the cake is that the entire suite of GLBA-compliant IT services provided by Systems Engineering is not just efficient, it is extremely cost-effective. "Systems Engineering helps me keep ahead of IT issues - proactively - so that they don't become problems for our internal users, or ultimately, our customers."
